If You're Not From the Prairie...

All the World - Liz Garton Scanlon"Following a circle of family and friends through the course of a day from morning till night, this book affirms the importance of all things great and small in our world, from the tiniest shell on the beach, to warm family connections, to the widest sunset sky." - Liz Garton Scanlon
I used this text to emphasize the unit's theme of how things, experience, and people within different places are important in influencing identity, relationships, and individual choices. Also, the positive message of this text served to foster a respectful learning environment in the classroom where differences are welcomed, not criticized. Secrets of Nova ScotiaUpon introducing the Nova Scotia setting in the novel, Fish House Secrets by Kathy Stinson, I used this video clip to show the allure, mystery, and culture of such a place. This was very important for the students so that they can visually understand and represent the setting in the novel. Whenever an unfamiliar term, experience, or phenomena was described in the text such as sand dollars and tide pools, I made an effort to find a video such as this one to show to students for their visual understandings.
Litany - Billy CollinsThis poem can be used as an imagery and personification prompt since the author uses a variety of animate and inanimate objects and experiences to describe his beloved. Students can develop their own "litany" of an important person in their life or about themselves using imagery language as Collins does in this text.
