The illustrative examples above from Alberta Learning are not prescribed, but they support the program of studies by indicating some of the ways in which students can demonstrate specific outcomes at each grade level. The illustrative examples add clarity about the intended depth and breadth of specific outcomes.
Example: For the Grade 9 Specific Learning Outcome 1.1 "Extend understanding by taking different points of view when rereading and reflecting on oral, print and other media texts", illustrative examples include having students complete a KWL Chart to discuss how their views have changed throughout reading a text.
Senior High School English Language Arts Guide to Implementation
The Senior High School English Language Arts Guide to Implementation is intended to help interpret the learning outcomes contained in the Program of Studies for Senior High School English Language Arts. This Guide provides information about how to help students achieve and demonstrate these outcomes by providing suggestions for instruction and assessment.
Example: For the Senior High Outcome 1.1.1 "Form tentative understandings, interpretations and positions", learning logs are suggested as a form of journal that focuses more specifically on student learning and metacognition. In their learning logs, students may record prior knowledge, reflect on new concepts, identify areas of conflict between previous and new information, identify difficulties in understanding, list questions they intend to pursue, and reflect on the strategies they have used

- Basic learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning as the most appropriate for addressing the majority of outcomes of the course(s) or substantial components of the course(s); or the most appropriate for meeting general outcomes across two or more grade levels.
- Support learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning to assist in addressing some of the outcomes of the course(s) or components of the course(s); or to assist in meeting the outcomes across two or more grade levels.
- Authorized Teaching resources are those teaching resources identified as the best available resources to support the implementation of programs of study and courses; they may be teacher guides to accompany student resources or teacher professional resources. The authorized teaching guides are listed with the student resources, while the authorized teaching professional resources are listed at the end of the booklet.
